the future of desktop interfaces

the future of desktop interfaces

AKA, designing and building a fake operating system in 3 months.

For this project, I’m going to work on something I have been thinking about for a long time – why desktop UI’s are so terrible. Windows in particular. In fact, a good summary of this project, how can I redesign windows to be more like other OS’s like Mac and even some Linux distros.

I also have another idea I would like to implement, called ‘workspaces’ – this would be something in addition to the desktop, and would be designed around modern workflows – ie using multiple tools and software to work on single projects. For example, for this Senior Design class, I use my blog, NYU Classes, Slack, Email, and a Notion page to keep track of my personal notes. Workspace’s allow me to keep track of everything related to one project in once place – so I double clicking on ‘Senior Design’, would open up all of the above, so I have everything I need at my fingertips.
